Playground Leaders take part in training to develop leadership skills which they use to lead others in sports activities. They have learnt how to communicate effectively, be organised, take responsibility and work with other people; all core skills which are important throughout life. Selected leaders support in the dining hall at lunchtimes by helping to serve water to pupils and help encourage manners and keeping the space tidy for others. In the playground, they organise a variety of games and activities for their peers to take part in. Additional responsibilities include supporting lunchtime competitions, writing reports for the newsletter and helping out at afterschool clubs.

Playground Buddies

Here at Southmead we are a Rights Respecting School and we all have the right to express our views and feelings and to be listened to.  Children in Year 4 and 5 have trained to become Playground Buddies. Training includes communication and listening skills, team building, working together, problem solving using Kelso’s Choices and confidentiality. They are available at lunchtimes to listen and support their peers, giving them an opportunity to talk to about any worries or problems in a safe place.

The training is supported by the ChildLine in Partnerships (CHIPS) programme and all Playground Buddies receive ongoing support from staff within the school.
