Hello and welcome to Year 2 Beech Class!
Mrs Melville is our teacher and we are supported by Mrs Hollingsworth and Ms Adams.
In Year 2, our expectations of the children are always high. We always expect pupils to try their best and aim for the stars! We are teaching your children to be independent, resilient and resourceful learners.
Our paintings for the year are works of art by Baboucarr Etu Ndow, “The Great Fire of London” by Lieve Verschuier and “The Ward in Arles” by Van Gogh.
Specific Aims and Important Information
In Maths this term, the children will be learning to multiply and divide accurately and how to identify and demonstrate fractions practically and pictorially.
In English, they are learning to use a range of co-ordination and subordination to extend sentences and to carefully edit and improve their own writing. They will also develop their use of different sentence types and will write for a range of purposes including diary writing in role as Samuel Pepys and writing a non-chronological report on the Great Fire of London.
We will be linking our Foundation lessons to our topic of The Great Fire of London whenever possible; the children have already produced some remarkable writing based on the history of the fire.
We send spellings home each Friday (tested the following Wednesday). Some are linked to a spelling rule and some are based around our topic for the term.
Our PE takes place on Mondays. On these days, please ensure your child has their full PE kit and with appropriate footwear. Jewellery must conform to the school policy. Earrings must be small studs only (no hoops).
How you can help
Here are some of the ways you can help your child at home:
- Read with your child every day (readers are changed on Mondays and Thursdays)
- Practise the 2s, 5s and 10s times tables with your child, reciting “1 times 2 is 2” ore singing the songs (above)
- Practise weekly spellings
- Practise handwriting regularly. In Year 2, we begin to join letters.
Monday:
- PE – bring kit and shoes
- Readers are changed
Wednesday:
- Spelling test
- Homework book to be returned
Thursday:
- Spanish or Music (alternate weeks)
- Art
- Readers are changed
Friday:
- Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) – students may bring a book from home to read or may borrow a book from the classroom library
- Homework sent home
In order to help us support your child in 1:1 reading, reading records are to be sent to school in your child’s bag each day.

Phonics – In year 2, we will revise the phonic sounds that the children learnt in Year 1. We focus on Phase 6, which includes knowledge of plurals, suffixes, sound families and tenses.

Maths
Maths- The children have been shown how to log on to times tables rockstars. This site is so much fun and great for practising those tricky times tables! Your child should be practising the 2s, 5s and 10s times tables.
Handwriting

Although we do not set handwriting homework, we expect children to use their spelling practise as an opportunity to practise formation and if they can, joining.
