PE

Intent

At Southmead Primary School, our intention is to instil in children a desire to be physically active, to live healthy lifestyles, and to excel in competitive sport. We nurture and develop children’s fine and gross motor skills through a broad and balanced range of activities to help them develop into ‘mature’, self-expressive, self-confident, creative, intelligent and skilful movers.

From Early Years onwards, through a creative and a developmental approach, we expose children to a rich movement vocabulary. In Early Years, children develop their fundamental movement skills (FMS) and transfer these skills into simple games throughout KS1. In KS2, children are given the opportunity to build on existing knowledge and skills, and learn how to evaluate and improve on their own and others’ performance. Children in KS2 also have the opportunity to develop skills in leadership and both support and lead on competitions and in afterschool clubs.

We use praise to motivate and spur the children on to achieve personal success, as well as to encourage a positive sense of self and an appreciation of what they can achieve. By fostering a reflective attitude in our children, they are able to reflect on their progress and targets and appreciate the learning journey that they are on.

Implementation

Children participate in two hours of high quality PE lessons every week taught by either the PE Specialist or Class Teacher. Teachers are supported to develop their subject knowledge through staff training, regular meetings and a wealth of resources. Lessons are planned and delivered to suit the needs of the class.

Children learn through the full breadth of the curriculum; including Invasion Games, and activities involving Striking and Fielding, Dance, Gymnastics, OAA and Athletics. Children enjoy lessons and learn to be creative within games. All children experience competition throughout the year starting with Personal Best and intra-school activities, and take part in inter-school competitions in KS2. Children develop leadership skills through the PlayMaker Award. Swimming is taught within the KS2 curriculum. Year 5 children receive weekly swimming lessons throughout the school year which gives them time to practise and apply skills needed to meet the end of key stage swimming requirements.

All children in KS1 are assessed on their fundamental movement skills as this is the basis of all sporting performance. As they move into KS2, children are assessed on how they develop and apply a broader range of skills in isolation and in combination. We also assess the thinking, social and emotional aspect of children’s development in physical education and school sport. Children learn how to self-assess and provide feedback to their peers.

We offer a wide range of extracurricular activities using internal and external providers where children can access a wide range of activities. We have whole school activities such as Dance Days, athlete visits and we take part in national and worldwide charity fundraisers. On entry to school, all children are allocated a house team, and through this they learn about the Olympic and Paralympic values of Friendship, Respect, Excellence, Determination, Inspiration, Courage and Equality.
