Intent
Pupil Premium pupils are expected to make at least the expected progress across the curriculum and a more than comparable against Pupil Premium pupils in similar settings. This will be done through quality first teaching and a range of appropriate interventions.
We ensure that all children are supported in their emotional well-being. A child that is distressed cannot learn and thrive and our ELSA and Mental Health First Aiders will provide timely and effective support where necessary. Where attendance is an issue, we work with families to support them to get their children back into school.
We facilitate pupils accessing a wide range of enrichment experiences both in and out of school, which will positively impact on their academic achievement and well-being.

What is Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium is an additional amount of money provided by the government for those children who have been entitled to receive free school meals at any point during the last six years.
Schools also receive funding for children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months, and children of service personnel (families who have parents in the Armed Forces).
How do I register my child?
If your child does not have free school meals but may be eligible because of your family’s income level, please contact the school office (in confidence) to register them. Alternatively you can download the Free School Meals form here and hand it in at the school office. Even if you do not wish for your child to have a free school meal, registering them will enable the school to claim pupil premium funding that will benefit your child.

What is the Pupil Premium Report?
In April 2011 the Government introduced the Pupil Premium Grant. Schools were allocated additional funding for children who are eligible for free school meals (FSM). This includes children who have been registered at any point in the last six years (known as Ever 6 FSM).
The Government believes that the Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between these children and their peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most. Specifically this funding was designed support schools in narrowing any attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers.
Schools are given the choice of how to use these funds to best meet those pupils’ needs.
The Government uses the number of children entitled to Free School Meals and, those in the care of the Local Authority and those with parents in the armed forces to calculate an appropriate amount of Pupil Premium for the school. Whilst those children receiving FSM are often supported, the school does not focus on these children alone. At Southmead we target support for children who are vulnerable and in need of additional support for a variety of reasons and wherever possible, we try to maximise the impact on others.
For 2022 to 2023, our Pupil Premium Grant is £215,340 with a Recovery Premium Grant of £5,583. This gives a total budget for this academic year of £220,923.
